New <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> subvariants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 have accounted for about 70 per cent of new Covid-19 cases in the US as the country's overall caseload has surpassed 100 million, according to the latest estimates by the <keyword id="116293" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention" source="Orion">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</keyword> (<keyword id="6379474" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cdc" source="Orion">CDC</keyword>). BQ.1.1 was estimated to make up about 38.4 per cent of circulating variants in the week ending December 17, and BQ.1 was estimated to make up 30.7 per cent, according to CDC data. The two variants are descendants of Omicron's BA.5 subvariant and they have been growing especially fast since October, reports Xinhua news agency citing the data. At the beginning of October, each of the two new variants accounted for about 1 per cent of new infections. They replaced BA.5 to be dominant strains in mid-November. BA.5 only accounted for 10 per cent of new infections in the latest week. Another Omicron subvariant XBB is also on the rise, accounting for 7.2 per cent of new infections. Researchers found that the BQ and XBB subvariants are "barely susceptible to neutralization" by the vaccines, including the new Omicron boosters, according to a study published recently in the journal <keyword id="6452450" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cell" source="Orion">Cell</keyword>. This could result in a surge of breakthrough infections and reinfections, though the vaccines have been shown to hold up against severe disease, according to the study. Since my Ukrainian-born mother dreamed of returning to Europe, she begged me to consider transferring to a university in England or France.But in the early 2000s, you couldn't transfer from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-college-parties-social-life-differ-between-us-uk-2023-5">US to UK colleges</a>. So I reapplied for the degree I hoped to study and headed off to Somerville College, Oxford, where I would "read" — major in — Modern Languages, French, and Russian.I quickly earned the moniker "American Jen," discovered that almost everyone's degree except mine was three years long, and met my future husband in my dorms my first month there. I guess you could say I loved it — I still live in England. Most of all, it opened my eyes to many differences between US and UK college life.<h2>In England, I studied my subject — and only my subject</h2>While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-yard-university-freshman-dorm-tour-photos-2023-9">some universities</a> in the UK are now experimenting with liberal-arts offerings, typically, people apply for one subject and study it for their whole degree. That meant I spent my university years obsessively reading and analyzing French and Russian texts and never looking at a math equation again — thankfully.But I do sometimes wish I could have taken the odd psychology or art-history class instead of trying to figure out which English word best fit my translation of an Old Church Slavonic text.Most undergraduates complete their BA in the UK in three years instead of four, but I spent my third year in Paris and St. Petersburg, Russia, as part of my studies; it was required for the Modern Language degree. At Oxford, you couldn't simply go on a semester or year abroad if it wasn't related to your degree, but lots of my friends had taken "gap years," where they'd gone traveling before starting their courses.<h2>I never had to share a dorm room in England</h2>In the US, your first-year college roommate can become your best friend or be the inspiration for every "How to cope with a bad college roommate" article ever written. University students in England wouldn't know; almost everyone ends up in their own space from the beginning.At Oxford, your living experience depends a lot on your college. Some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yale-university-freshman-dorm-room-college-student-2023-12">students can stay in dorms</a> for their entire degree. Those dorms might include fireplaces and fine art along the walls — but rarely include roommates.In my college, most people "lived out" in shared houses with friends during their second year because there weren't enough rooms in the college to house every student.Even though it was a Brutalist-looking slab of gray concrete erected in the 1960s, my first-year housing block will always hold a special place in my heart. I had a sink in my room and a shared bathroom and kitchen in my hallway.In my final year, I lived in an "apartment-style" dorm — with its own kitchen and two spacious bedrooms — with my friend.<h2>My homework grades didn't count, and I never had regular tests at Oxford</h2>Instead of being divided into semesters like back in the US, the academic year in the UK comprises three terms. I had a lot of work, though: translations, prose compositions from English into French or Russian, essays, literary textual-analysis papers, and reading Proust and Tolstoy in the original — but none of those grades counted toward my final result.Instead, I needed to pass exams at the end of my first year, and then I wasn't tested again until the end of my final year.<h2>My college social life looked a lot different in the UK</h2>There might not be a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/university-of-alabama-rush-experience-miserable-2023-8">fraternity and sorority culture</a> in UK universities, but there was plenty of drinking in my day, especially since the legal drinking age is 18 in England. I practically lived in pubs — and fell asleep in them every once in a while.My college years in England involved a lot of dressing up for fancy-dress-themed "bops," or dances with cheesy music, and black-tie balls. The formal dinners we had at Oxford surprised me the most. But it really began to take off in July, when its estimated share of total cases doubled.Eris <a target="_blank" href="https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#variant-proportions">accounted for</a> fewer than 1% of COVID-19 cases in the US at the end of April, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But it is now estimated to account for more than 20% of new US COVID-19 cases, <a target="_blank" href="https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#variant-proportions">the CDC says</a>.Scientists aren't yet sure why Eris is now so common, but its dramatic increase led the World Health Organization to upgrade Eris from a "variant under monitoring" to a "variant of interest" in early August. That is, it makes us sicker."Swartzberg added, however, that our understanding of Eris is "still very early in the game — we haven't adequately been able to study enough people with EG.5 to know with certainty that it doesn't make us sicker, or conversely that it makes us less sick."<h2>Symptoms of Eris seem similar to those of other coronavirus strains</h2>So far, symptoms of Eris seem virtually identical to those caused by other coronavirus strains, according to Swartzberg. Eris, like other strains that cause COVID-19, can lead to a loss of taste or smell, cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, fatigue, body aches, and headaches. Those most at risk include older people, people with compromised immune systems, and those with chronic diseases, Swartzberg said.Eris may be more contagious than other strains, but it doesn't yet appear to be deadlier. What we know about new coronavirus variant 'Eris,' from symptoms to how fast it's spreading

No new Covid-19 variants have emerged in <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword> during the recent surge in infections since the country ended its zero-Covid policy, according to an analysis of cases in <keyword id="1333" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="beijing" source="Orion">Beijing</keyword> published in The <keyword id="6361830" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lancet" source="Orion">Lancet</keyword>. The study suggests two existing <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> sub-variants, BA.5.2 and BF.7, among the most dominant variants in Beijing during 2022, accounted for more than 90 per cent of local infections between November 14 and December 20, 2022. Imported cases during the same period mostly involved different variants to those dominant in Beijing. Genome analysis of 413 new Covid-19 infections in Beijing spanning the time period when China lifted its most strict pandemic control policies suggests that all were caused by existing strains. "Our analysis suggests two known Omicron sub-variants - rather than any new variants - have chiefly been responsible for the current surge in Beijing, and likely China as a whole. However, with ongoing large-scale circulation of Covid-19 in China, it is important we continue to monitor the situation closely so that any new variants that might emerge are found as early as possible," said Professor George Gao of the Institute of Microbiology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The results represent a snapshot of the pandemic in China, due to the characteristics of Beijing's population and the circulation of highly transmissible Covid-19 strains there. In the three years since Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic, the emergence of variants such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron has caused multiple waves of cases around the world. In the latest study, the authors analysed Covid-19 samples detected in Beijing in 2022. Genome sequences were generated using rapid, large-scale sequencing technology, and their evolutionary history and population dynamics analysed using existing high-quality Covid-19 sequences. Analysis of the 413 new sequences revealed they all belong to existing, known COVID-19 strains. The dominant strain in Beijing after November 14 2022 was BF.7, which accounted for 75.7 per cent of local infections. Another Omicron sub-variant, BA5.2, was responsible for 16.3 per cent of local cases. Professor Wolfgang Preiser and Dr Tongai Maponga of the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, who were not involved in the study, said: "It is welcome to see this much-needed data from China. It is certainly reassuring that this study yielded no evidence for novel variants but not a surprise: the surge is amply explained by the abrupt cessation of effective control measures." However, they urge caution in drawing conclusions about China as a whole based on data from Beijing, saying that "the SARS-CoV-2 molecular epidemiological profile in one region of a vast and densely populated country cannot be extrapolated to the entire country". Meanwhile, half a world away, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-declassifies-images-chinese-intercepts-over-east-south-china-seas-2023-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the US faces increasing competition</a> with <a href="https://www.sandboxx.us/news/weapons-of-mass-destruction-strategy-iran-could-have-a-nuclear-weapon-in-14-days/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">China</a>, which US leaders have condemned for its pressure on Taiwan, violations of international law, and political repression at home.US diplomats are at the tip of the spear for those efforts, living and working on the frontlines as they deal with friends and adversaries, at times in dangerous or isolated outposts. To protect those diplomats, the State Department relies on a little-known but highly capable agency — the Diplomatic Security Service.<h2>Protecting US diplomats in an evolving world</h2><div type="image" title="Diplomatic Security Service Mobile Security Deployments team" height="1333" width="2000" msid="105447842" hostid="261" sizebytes="157030"></div>As the State Department's law-enforcement and security arm, the Diplomatic Security Service has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/state-departments-diplomatic-security-service-protects-diplomats-2022-4" target="_top">protecting US diplomats at home and abroad since 1916</a>. The DSS is the US law-enforcement agency with the largest global footprint, and it works closely with governments around the world.With about 2,500 active special agents, the DSS is responsible for four main missions: protecting US diplomats and foreign diplomats in the US, conducting passport and visa fraud investigations, ensuring the security of classified US travel documents, and performing security background checks.The DSS has developed several initiatives to ensure the safety of US diplomats and missions amid an evolving operational environment.As part of its mission to protect State Department personnel, facilities, and information, DSS routinely conducts emergency planning and exercises to prepare for incidents at US missions overseas.Its Mobile Security Deployments, which are specialized tactical units, are on standby to respond to any heightened threats or emergencies at home and abroad.<div type="image" title="State Department Diplomatic Security Service Mobile Security Deployment" height="1500" width="2000" msid="105447845" hostid="261" sizebytes="155322"></div>Regional security office teams also develop and maintain an emergency action plan, which outlines the roles and responsibilities of individuals in an emergency or crisis, for each diplomatic mission. These plans are reviewed regularly to ensure that they are still relevant and reflect any changes in the operational environment.DSS agents <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/state-dept-diplomatic-security-service-agents-back-in-kyiv-ukraine-2022-6" target="_top">led the way when the US reopened its embassy</a> in Kyiv in May, and Insider understands that the DSS has created a robust security program tailored to that facility.The Overseas Security Advisory Council, which is part of the DSS, provides another layer of security. The council collects information from private-sector security professionals to gain insight from US businesses and institutions operating overseas about the security situation on the ground."Through the council, the State Department can exchange information in real-time with hundreds of private businesses, faith-based organizations, and other US entities," a State Department spokesperson told Insider.The DSS also manages the department's Foreign Emergency Response Team, an interagency team that is on call to respond on short notice to critical incidents worldwide.<div type="image" title="US flag embassy Kyiv Ukraine" height="1333" width="2000" msid="105447846" hostid="261" sizebytes="406058"></div>"The team deploys overseas to advise, assist, assess, and coordinate crisis-response activities. It may deploy in response to terrorism incidents and significant threats, to support chiefs of mission during large events like the Olympics, and during US counterterrorism exercises," the State Department spokesperson added.The US military, mainly through its Joint Special Operations Command, also has special-operations units on constant standby to respond to any terrorism or hostage situations abroad.Another DSS initiative aims to give diplomats and their families the tools to survive overseas. The Foreign Affairs Counter Threat training program is a five-day course that provides diplomats and their families with skills to enhance their security awareness and preparedness.As relations with <a href="https://www.19fortyfive.com/2023/10/historic-tragedy-the-war-in-ukraine-continues-to-be-a-bloody-stalemate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Russia</a> and China have deteriorated, the DSS has had to adjust its activities to ensure it can protect US facilities in those countries and the diplomats and staff at them, but it's dealing with a growing set of threats from outside the physical realm.<h2>Proliferating cyber threats</h2><div type="image" title="Diplomatic Security Service computer" height="1333" width="2000" msid="105447847" hostid="261" sizebytes="104744"></div>Following a string of high-profile cyberattacks against government agencies and private businesses, US national-security officials are increasingly focused on cybersecurity.Insider understands that the State Department's IT network is under attack by malicious state and non-state cyber actors on a daily basis.Protecting the communications, data, and systems used by US diplomats is part of the DSS purview. The service operates a cyber-operations center staffed by a leading team of dedicated cyber operators who monitor diplomatic digital infrastructure and data on a 24/7 basis.Moreover, the DSS works closely with the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Management and Budget to ensure the State Department meets the requirements for cyber operations laid out by federal regulations and legislative mandates.The DSS has changed how it protects US diplomats and classified information in order to keep pace with the evolution of technology and the cyber domain. Two new <keyword id="13825644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omicron-subvariants" source="Orion">Omicron subvariants</keyword> are on the rise in the United States, adding to concern of health experts whether they may fuel a summer surge in COVID-19 cases. The subvariants, known as BA.4 and BA.5, were estimated to make up nearly 13 per cent of all new US COVID-19 cases in the latest week ending June 4, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Tuesday. BA.4 made up 5.4 per cent of the new cases, while BA.5 made up 7.6 per cent, according to CDC estimates. The two subvariants represented the highest percentage of cases in a region that includes Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, according to the CDC, Xinhua news agency reported. Another subvariant BA.2.12.1, which remains the dominant variant in the country, made up 62.2 per cent of all new US cases in the past week following months of steady growth. The BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants were added to the <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword>'s monitoring list in March and designated as variants of concern by the <keyword id="668044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Centre-for-Disease-Prevention-and-Control" source="Orion">European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control</keyword>. CDC data showed they were present in all US regions. "BA.4 and 5 may end up becoming the dominant Omicron lineages in the coming weeks or months," said Nathan Grubaugh, an associate professor of epidemiology at Yale University's School of Public Health. The United States is currently averaging about 108,000 COVID-19 cases and 300 deaths each day, the latest CDC data showed. Health experts believe the real number is significantly higher as increasing at-home testing results had not been tracked. Some epidemiologists warned surging cases may put people with compromised health at risk and can also expose many infected people to long-term health problems. New Omicron subvariants on the rise in the US

<ul class="summary-list"><li>US Army Special Operations Command held its Best Combat Diver Competition in September.</li></ul>US special operators are the best in the world, and they need to stay in top form amid <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-chinese-pilots-want-batting-practice-against-us-generals-say-2023-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rising tensions around the world</a> and increasing competition with Russia and China.In September, US commandos showed off their skills during the US Army Special Operations Command Best Combat Diver Competition — and Army Special Forces divers flexed their little-known underwater muscles to triumph over their Navy brethren.Over three days at Naval Air Station Key West, 13 two-man teams from across the Army and Navy special-operations communities competed in 10 combat-diving events for the prize of being named the best combat dive team in the US special-operations community.The events included physical and academic tests, parachute jumps over water, underwater navigation, and helicopter insertions.<div type="image" title="Army Special Operations Best Combat Diver Chinook" height="749" width="1000" msid="105151211" hostid="261" sizebytes="125032"></div>The competition was close, but when the dust settled Green Berets <a href="https://taskandpurpose.com/news/special-forces-2023-best-combat-diver-competition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won the day</a>, taking the first three spots, with a team from 5th Special Forces Group in first place, a 2nd Special Warfare Training Group team in second, and a 5th Special Forces Group team placing third.Fourth place went to a team of <a href="https://www.19fortyfive.com/2023/08/underwater-navy-seals-a-deadly-weapon-in-any-maritime-conflict/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Navy SEALs</a> from SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One."I'm really proud of the organization for going above and beyond. It's [an] added layer of challenge that only a few guys decide to pursue once they have finished with selection and the Q course," the Green Beret said, referring to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-developed-version-of-special-forces-q-course-for-ukrainians-2023-1" target="_top">the Special Forces Qualifications Course</a>."I know many tough operators who don't try for a dive team because they are afraid to fail," the Green Beret said, speaking anonymously because they weren't authorized to talk to the media.<h2>Combat diving revival</h2><div type="image" title="Army Special Operations Best Combat Diver" height="1333" width="2000" msid="105151214" hostid="261" sizebytes="85600"></div>Like other special-operations forces, combat divers can have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/attacks-behind-russian-lines-suggest-ukrainian-troops-using-us-training-2022-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outsize impact on the battlefield</a>."Combat Divers create an enormous challenge for adversary planning by forcing them to plan and implement countermeasures for a wide variety of scenarios over an impossibly large geographic area," Lino Miani, a former Special Forces officer, told Insider."The Combat Dive capability [also] allows us to build or enhance similar capabilities in partner forces, vastly expanding available options even if US forces aren't directly available for Combat Dive operations," added Miani, who is president of the Combat Diver Foundation, a nonprofit public charity dedicated to the combat-diver community and a sponsor of the 2023 Best Combat Diver Competition.<div type="image" title="Army special operations forces combat diver" height="1381" width="2000" msid="105151215" hostid="261" sizebytes="120566"></div>US strategy for countering China hinges on partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region, and special-operations forces are a key component of the US military's relationships with those countries.Despite their value, not all special-operations forces have the same influence. The US special-operations combat-diver community in particular has had ups and downs recently. Two decades of land warfare in the Middle East did little to endear it to military leaders and policymakers.With the attention of leadership focused on counterterrorism and counterinsurgency campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, the combat-diver capability was left to <a href="https://sofrep.com/news/exclusive-the-perilous-state-of-the-special-forces-combat-diver-capability/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">atrophy</a>, leading to problems with faulty equipment and insufficient training. The Army Special Forces dive teams suffered the most.Every Special Forces Group — there are five active duty and two National Guard — has about 72 operational teams specializing in different infiltration methods, including mountain warfare, mobility operations, and military free-fall parachuting. By Paul Griffin, The University of Queensland It seems every few weeks we hear about a new COVID variant, and it's hard to know how concerned we ought to be. A "recombinant" variant has emerged, dubbed "<keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> XE", which is the result of two omicron strains merging together in a single host and then going on to infect others. So what do we know about this new hybrid, and do we need to worry? A bit about Omicron and its variants Omicron is a variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that was first discovered in Botswana on November 11 2021 and designated a variant of concern by the WHO on November 26. Since this time, it has been transmitted worldwide and replaced <keyword id="13452822" type="COMPANY" weightage="50" keywordseo="delta" source="Orion" meta.marketcap="5.23121" meta.tagname="Delta Industrial Resources Ltd" meta.tagpopularcount="0" meta.sectorid="542" meta.entitytype="company" meta.matchtype="exact" meta.aum="0" meta.entityid="2207" meta.tagseoname="delta-industrial-resources-ltd" meta.sector="Miscellaneous" meta.tagnameorg="Delta Industrial Resources Ltd.">Delta</keyword> to become the dominant variant. Omicron has since continued to evolve to have multiple different lineages, or genetically related subvariants. This includes the original Omicron BA.1 (B.1.1.529) and also BA.2 and BA.3. BA.2 is more infectious than BA.1 and has now taken over or outcompeted BA.1 to become the new dominant form of the SARS-CoV-2 virus worldwide, with the WHO officially announcing this to be the case on March 22 2022. The differences we have seen with Omicron relative to previous variants are explained by the relatively large number of mutations it has acquired, with 60 mutations not found in the original virus arising from Wuhan, <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>. Among these mutations are 32 genetic changes in the spike protein. The spike protein is the part of the virus it uses to attach to human cells, as well as the target of the immune response against the virus, from both vaccines and prior infection. BA.2 shares many of these same mutations as the original Omicron variant, but also has 28 unique genetic changes of its own. Four of these genetic changes are in the spike protein, which explains why some of its characteristics are different to the original Omicron variant (BA.1), including the fact it appears to be approximately 30 to 50% more infectious than BA.1. What's a 'recombinant'? Just as we have seen new variants arise, followed by the evolution of subvariants or different lineages, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has continued to change in other ways as well. In recent times we have seen not just spontaneous changes in the genetic code that have accounted for the changes described above, but also so-called recombinants. A recombinant is where related viruses exchange genetic material to create offspring with genetic material from both parent viruses. This can arise when viruses of two different strains (or variants or subvariants) co-infect the same cell. The genetic material of the viruses can get mixed and packaged together to make a new recombinant virus, with properties of either or both parent viruses. The properties of the recombinant virus therefore depend on which parts of the genetic material from the parent viruses make it into the new version - just like you might have your mum's nose and your dad's knees. When Delta and Omicron recombine, the resulting progeny have been referred to as "Deltacron" (although more officially these are referred to as XD and XF). This type of recombinant was first identified in France in mid-February and seems to have a genetic sequence mostly the same as Delta, but with aspects of the spike protein from Omicron BA.1. So what is XE and where is it spreading? XE is a recombination of BA.1 and BA.2. There are many other BA.1 and BA.2 recombinants, including XQ in the UK, XG from Denmark, XJ from Finland and XK from Belgium. While XE still comprises a small proportion of total sequenced cases, it has shown evidence of community transmission, at least within England where it was first detected in mid-January. There have now been just over 1,100 cases recorded. It has also been identified in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, China and Thailand. Initially the growth rate for XE appeared to not be significantly different from BA.2, but more recent data from the UK suggests it has a growth rate of around 10 to 20% above that of BA.2. This data remains preliminary and based on small numbers, so may change as we get more information. If it is true, then this means XE is likely to be slightly more contagious than BA.2, which was slightly more contagious than BA.1, which was more contagious than Delta. Do we need to worry? Our immune response that helps to protect against COVID-19 is generated by vaccination or from previous infection, and it mostly targets the spike protein. Given XE basically has the same spike protein as BA.2, it doesn't appear our protection against XE will be significantly reduced. While this is something public health agencies and expert groups certainly should monitor, and they are, it isn't really something that is unexpected given the number of cases we continue to see worldwide. So it shouldn't be a cause of extra concern for the general public. The best way to slow the emergence of new variants, as well as recombinants, remains having as many people in the world protected by vaccination to reduce the pool of susceptible hosts in which these events can occur.
